Hi! We are the owners of the Portland, Oregon Just Between Friends sale since Fall 2008 when we acquired it from the previous JBF owners extraordinaire: Mandy & Kiley!
Brooke’s Family... I am mom to Sadie B (3) and Given (1)...the best kids I could have ever hoped for. I have been married to my husband Greg for 4 years and I adore the rest of my family even though it seems like they are millions of miles away in Pennsylvania & Michigan.
Tammy’s Family… I am mom to Townes Waylon (3). Motherhood has been the best thing I have ever done with my time. It fills my days with way more love and happiness than any job I ever worked. I am blessed with the best family anyone could ask for (especially my mom) but moved away from home for love. Most of my family (including my in-laws) lives in Texas. Honestly, they don’t understand why anyone would ever leave and always welcome me with open arms when I get to come visit them.
Why did Brooke choose JBF?? I absolutely adore finding a good deal! The first time I walked in to a JBF sale, I could barely stop myself from jumping up and down in excitement. I was among my bargain-hunting people! More than anything, I wanted to share this excitement and money-saving opportunity with my community. Doesn’t JBF just makes sense for everyone involved? Why would we parents buy new when we can purchase items at greatly reduced costs and earn cash from these investments? We parents invest so much money in the items our children need and many of these items are in great shape long after our children grow out of the clothes, grow tired of the toys, and grow beyond the equipment and furniture. Plus, JBF is a fun way to meet other moms in the area!
Why did Tammy choose JBF?? I had been mulling over the idea of going back to work but couldn’t bear to part with my son. He changes so much every day that I just can’t imagine not getting to experience it. Brooke introduced me to JBF and when the opportunity to take over the Portland operation came up, she asked me if I would be interested in joining her. It sounded like the PERFECT thing for me. I am a total bargain shopper, am great at organizing people, and can organize the sale without having to give up my primary role as a mother. The Portland JBF sale is such a community with volunteers that come sale after sale and friendships that get sparked. I was interested in continuing work that I felt benefited the community and had been looking for work that allowed more of my personality to show through. This is a job where I can be myself, have a better life, and help other people have better lives all at the same time. What else could you ask for?
Brooke’s Experience... My background is in Speech-Language Pathology and Educational Leadership which for me, has included working primarily with kids in special education, teaching and mentoring students at the University of Vermont and Portland State, and even dabbling in conference planning. I love my current job situation; my husband and I share the joys and responsibilities of being stay-at-home parents and speech pathologists outside our home in NE Portland. I feel honored to have the opportunity to explore three different passions at once: being a mom, working with students in need of assistance with communication, and working with JBF on behalf of families in the Portland area by helping all of us care for our families and be great stewards of our resources.
Tammy’s Experience… My background is in land use planning and has primarily included experience working for local governments. I worked in Indiana for a couple of years before moving to Oregon. Since living here, I did a short stint as a consultant before getting a job with Washington County in the current planning office. I then got the opportunity to work for Multnomah County’s planning department where I worked with residents of the rural portions of the county. I especially enjoyed working with the National Scenic Area to help protect the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge. I got to meet so many interesting people and became more familiar than most people ever get to be with the natural beauty we are blessed to have here in our Metro area. When I reached my thirties I decided it was time to launch into motherhood and decided to change the focus of my life to stay home with my child. I have never regretted this for a minute and now completely understand why so many professional women make this “sacrifice” when they have children.
Our Goals... By Fall 2009, we hope that the Portland community has benefited from two successful JBF sale events at the Expo Center hosting over 600 active consignors and serving more than 5000 families. In five years, we hope to be bursting at the seams at the Expo Center! By 2013, JBF-Portland will have 1200 consignors and be forced to cap our consignor registration so that we can display all the merchandise and accommodate all the shoppers!
First Thing's First... Our families come first. We love bargains and are passionate about reusing resources. We live active lifestyles both as moms and as women in our N/NE Portland communities. We are honored to help you save & make money for your families. If you would like to visit with Brooke or Tammy, please feel free to email: BrookeUnwin@jbfsale.com or TammyBoren@jbfsale.com.
See you at the Sale!
